Carl Menger

"A society that does not recognize that each individual has values of his own which he is entitled to follow,
can have no respect for the dignity of the individual and cannot really know freedom.

Understanding Political Libertarianism
In his meandering July 20th essay, Edward Feser failed totally to demonstrate the "The Trouble with Libertarianism." It's hard to pin down the argument in Feser's convoluted dissertation. I count at least four loosely confederated claims:
(1) 'Libertarianism' does not designate a single, coherent philosophical position. There are only "libertarianisms," i.e., various mutually inconsistent brands of so-called libertarianism.
(2) Libertarianisms can be lumped into two main categories:
a. Traditionalist, natural rights classical liberalism with a "thick" conception of human nature and human natural ends. (I'll call this "thick libertarianism.")
b. "Economistic" consequentialist libertarianism, with a "thin," reductionist conception of human nature and rational choice. I'll call this ("thin libertarianism.")
(3) Both thick and thin libertarianism pretend to be neutral between various moral worldviews, but aren't really. In the end, each marginalizes someone.
(4) Thick libertarians have more in common with natural law conservatives than they do with thin libertarians, and ought to be wary of allying themselves with laissez allez economists...

America?s Socialist Policy in Panama
The 90th anniversary of the official opening of the Panama Canal to international commerce will be celebrated on August 15. .... That date also commemorates a leading example of the U.S. government's pursuit of an interventionist foreign policy and rejection of private enterprise in favor of state-managed public works.

Herbert Spencer, The Principles of Ethics, Political Rights- so called

Michael Moore no decepciona.

Monetary policy without money
Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan testified before committees of both the U.S Senate and House of Representatives earlier this week, presenting the Fed's semiannual monetary policy report. The most interesting part of the testimony and the formal report is how little was said about the money supply. Chairman Greenspan warned
about the possible danger from future inflation and enumerated the factors that seem to be behind the recent increase in prices. But never once did he point to the actual culprit -- the Fed's own monetary policy.

Piccoli azionisti senza garanzie

Slaves to the Marshall Myth
Of all the myths that persist concerning economic history, the myth that the United States rebuilt Europe and Japan following the Second World War is among the most popular. While there is considerable disagreement concerning other myths, like the notion that FDR saved us all during the Great Depression, the myth of the Marshall Plan enjoys wide support.

The Sheer Hypocrisy of U.S. Trade Policy
The United States, once a beacon of free enterprise, free trade, and limited government, has squandered most of its moral and political capital with the world. Gone are the days when we were criticized for being too much in favor of free trade. The hypocrisy with which the government proclaims free trade globally while practicing protectionism domestically is shameful.

Health care can have a zero price to the user, but that doesn't mean it's free .... The problem with a good or service having a zero price is that demand is going to exceed supply. Why Capitalism is Inevitable
For all the talk about the triumph of capitalism, it seems that the free market?the real thing and not someone's imagined conception of it?has very few friends in politics or the world of ideas. Thus do the writings Murray Rothbard, the leading defender of the market economy of his generation, still have the power to shock and clarify the essential ideological and political battles of our time. This essay in particular constitutes on commentary on his powerful piece from 1973: "A Future of Peace and Capitalism."

Anti-trust is Anti-Competitive
We can all appreciate the drive and spirit behind the competitive impulse, writes Ninos Malek, and we recognize that yields productive gains for everyone. The primary motivation for businesses is profit, and if they are successful, they have not only served themselves but also society.

Yet, businesses sometimes urge the government to intervene when their competitors with the same goal pose a threat to them. This is the driving force behind antitrust legislation. The supposed purpose of antitrust is to ensure the competition necessary for a thriving market economy. In reality, it is a bludgeon used by businesses against their better-performing competitors.

Why the Business Cycle Happens
For nearly a hundred years, economists have been groping for an explanation for the business cycle, writes Murray Rothbard, and they have come up with little beyond descriptions of empirical events or speculations about their capitalist origin. All the while, the real explanation has been before their eyes in the 19th century British School and the modern Austrian School.

Spiderman 2: The Virtue of Selfishness"
"Spiderman 2" is a truly wonderful movie that if you haven't seen it already, you better run to your nearest theater (after first making sure to watch the first movie on video if you happened to miss it).

The original "Spiderman" was such a delight that I had to steer clear of reviews of the sequel prior to seeing it on opening day. This was the only way to spare myself the sneers of critics who fancy themselves superior to any superhero flick, and the only way to experience all the twists and turns untainted by any spoilers beyond those of the trailer (which itself rocks -- I mean the brief one that starts with The Kiss).

Have no fear, we'll reveal none of those plot twists here. But you want to see this movie because:
1) Like the first, it has a story. The creators obeyed the dictum that the script is important. The story of the sequel is even richer and more satisfying than that of the first film. The script provides the sturdy foundation for a lavish, surefooted, poignant and persuasive dream as smartly designed as any spider's web.

2) There are not only many neat plot twists, many moments of engaging humor or unabashed admiration of the heroic (elevator scene! train scene! apartment-window scene!), but also some thrilling thematic twists. These pertain to what we supposedly must demand of ourselves if we are to be true to ourselves and our potential. At one point Peter Parker has one understanding of this issue, the one instilled by Uncle Ben and Aunt May, and it seems very convincing. Later he gains a different understanding, but it's not as if the earlier take on the issue is entirely to be discounted. In part the movie is about real versus alleged "conflict of interest" of the sort discussed in Ayn Rand's Virtue of Selfishness . It's also about choices, including the choices that are up to other people, not you.

"Spiderman 2" is a movie that says there's a hero in all of us, and that makes us believe it.
